There’s something special about the Fourth of July in Virginia Beach.
Maybe it’s watching the sun rise over the Atlantic before a day spent barefoot in the sand. Maybe it’s the smell of backyard cookouts drifting through neighborhoods like those in Princess Anne, Pungo, and Red Mill. Or maybe it’s the fireworks reflecting off the ocean while families gather to celebrate another year of freedom.
This year feels even more meaningful.
As America celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, communities across the country are marking this historic milestone in a big way. If you’re lucky enough to be spending the holiday in Coastal Virginia, you’ve picked one of the best places to celebrate.
Whether you’re vacationing in Sandbridge for the week, visiting family in Virginia Beach, or you’re lucky enough to call Southern Virginia Beach home year-round, here’s your local guide to making this Fourth of July one for the memory books.
If you’ve never watched the sun come up over Sandbridge Beach, this is your sign.
Before the beach fills with umbrellas and boogie boards, there’s a quietness that’s hard to describe. It’s one of my favorite reminders of why so many families visit Virginia Beach… and eventually decide they never want to leave.
Grab a coffee, take a barefoot walk along the shoreline, collect seashells with the kids, or simply enjoy a peaceful start to one of the busiest weekends of the summer.
Local Tip: The earlier you arrive, the easier parking will be if you’re not staying in Sandbridge.
Most visitors know Virginia Beach for its beaches.
Locals know one of its greatest treasures is just a few miles inland.
Take a drive through Pungo and you’ll discover family farms, roadside produce stands, local markets, and wide-open farmland that feels worlds away from the Oceanfront.
Depending on the season, you’ll often find fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, homemade ice cream, baked goods, flowers, and locally grown produce.
It’s one of the reasons Southern Virginia Beach has such a unique charm.
One of my favorite parts about living here is how many locally owned restaurants make every weekend feel like a vacation.
Whether you’re craving fresh seafood after a morning on the beach, brunch with friends in Red Mill, or a casual lunch near Princess Anne, this is the perfect weekend to skip the chain restaurants and support local businesses.
After all, it’s these small businesses that help make our community feel like home.
No Fourth of July weekend is complete without ice cream.
Whether your family has a favorite spot in Sandbridge or you’re exploring local shops around Princess Anne and Red Mill, this is one tradition worth keeping.
Pro tip: Go earlier in the afternoon if you can. Holiday lines get long!
Need a break from the crowds?
Head south toward Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge for one of the most beautiful natural areas in Virginia Beach.
Walk the trails, watch for wildlife, rent a kayak, or simply enjoy a slower pace before the evening festivities begin.
It’s one of Southern Virginia Beach’s best-kept secrets.
This year’s Independence Day carries even more significance as our nation celebrates 250 years of American history.
Throughout Coastal Virginia, you’ll find patriotic celebrations, concerts, neighborhood events, and family activities honoring this historic milestone.
Take a moment between the fireworks and festivities to appreciate the generations who helped build the communities we enjoy today.
Of course, the fireworks are the grand finale.
Whether you choose the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Mount Trashmore, a neighborhood celebration, or simply enjoy the show from the beach in Sandbridge, there’s no shortage of spectacular views.
Bring beach chairs, pack snacks, and arrive early if you’re heading to one of the larger celebrations.
Trust me… you’ll be glad you did.
Some of the best Fourth of July traditions aren’t the ones you plan.
They’re the spontaneous family bike rides.
The kids chasing fireflies after dinner.
The card games around the rental house table.
The conversations that last long after the fireworks end.
Take lots of pictures.
Put the phones away for a while.
Stay for the sunset.
Order dessert.
Let the kids stay up a little later.
Years from now, those are the moments you’ll remember most.
Every summer I meet families who come to Sandbridge for vacation and leave asking the same question:
“Could we actually live here?”
The answer is… absolutely.
Whether you’re dreaming of a waterfront home in Sandbridge, a neighborhood with room to grow in Princess Anne, a family-friendly community in Red Mill, or the peaceful lifestyle you’ll find around Pungo and Courthouse Estates, Southern Virginia Beach offers something for everyone.
As a local real estate expert specializing in Southern Virginia Beach, I love helping buyers discover not just the right house, but the right community for the life they want to build.
Because buying a home isn’t just about square footage.
It’s about finding the place where your own family traditions begin.
Happy Fourth of July, and here’s to celebrating 250 years of America in one of the best places to call home.
