Nothing says “welcome to the neighborhood” like a good old-fashioned picnic! Whether you’ve just moved in or you’ve lived here for years, packing a picnic is one of the simplest—and most joyful—ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Coastal Virginia. And let me tell you, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake have some of the most charming green spaces and waterfront hideaways around.
Here are my favorite local parks and picnic-perfect spots where you can stretch out a blanket, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy a laid-back afternoon with your favorite people (or a good book!).
A beloved local gem! With over 20 miles of shaded trails, marsh boardwalks, and a peaceful Chesapeake Bay beach, First Landing is the ultimate spot for a picnic with a view. Choose a shaded picnic table or set up right on the sand. It’s great for families, nature lovers, and anyone craving a little coastal calm.
Red Wing is one of those spots locals love to keep secret—but I’m sharing it with you! Wide lawns, peaceful gardens, and plenty of shady trees make this park perfect for picnicking. Don’t miss the Japanese Garden for a post-lunch stroll. Bonus: there are grills and covered shelters if you’re hosting a bigger group!
If you like your sandwiches with an ocean view, this is your spot. Located in the quieter Sandbridge area, Little Island Park has picnic shelters, clean restrooms, and direct beach access. It’s a peaceful alternative to the busy Oceanfront, and great for beachcombing after lunch.
Iconic and family-friendly, Mount Trashmore is a local favorite for a reason! The big grassy hill (yes, it’s a former landfill turned city park!) is great for kite flying, people-watching, or rolling down with the kids. There are tons of open spaces for picnicking, plus a skate park, playground, and walking paths around the lake.
Looking for something peaceful and a little off the radar? Oak Grove Lake Park is a hidden gem in the heart of Chesapeake. It has a beautiful lake, wide walking trails, and quiet picnic spots under the trees. The vibe here is super relaxed—perfect for a casual lunch break or evening picnic walk.
This one’s a nature-lover’s dream. Located in southern Chesapeake, Northwest River Park is full of wooded trails, canoe rentals, and shaded picnic shelters. It’s a little more rustic, so bring bug spray—but the peaceful setting is absolutely worth it.
Sometimes, the best moments come from slowing down and enjoying what’s right in front of you—good food, fresh air, and great company. Whether you’re planning a sunny Saturday lunch or a sunset charcuterie spread, these parks make it easy to fall in love with life in Coastal Virginia.
Looking for a home that’s close to the places you love? I’d be honored to help you find your perfect fit. Let’s connect!
