Fall, y’all—it’s finally here! There’s something magical about autumn in Coastal Virginia. The air gets a little crisper, the leaves start to turn (yes, even at the beach!), and weekends fill up fast with bonfires, cozy sweaters, and seasonal treats.
Whether you’ve just moved to the area or have been here for years, this is the season to get out and explore. Here’s a local-friendly, kid-approved fall bucket list with 10 festive ways to make the most of autumn in Hampton Roads.
Skip the drive-thru this time and check out a local coffee shop! Try Three Ships Coffee in Virginia Beach, in Pale Horse Coffee in Chesapeake, or Coalescence Coffee in Norfolk for a seasonal sip with cozy vibes.
Pack flannel blankets, thermoses of cider, and your favorite homemade treats. Great picnic spots include First Landing State Park and Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake.
Rainy fall day? It’s the perfect excuse to duck into a local shop like Read Books VB in the ViBe District or Prince Books in Norfolk. Bonus: many offer seasonal storytimes or cozy reading corners.
There’s no shortage of handmade candles, fall wreaths, and cozy decor waiting for you at local artisan markets. Check out the Virginia Beach Farmers Market or the Ghent Farmers Market in Norfolk for weekend browsing.
Take a walk or bike ride through First Landing State Park or Northwest River Park to spot the early signs of fall. The cypress trees and marsh grasses put on an underrated but stunning autumn display.
Several parks and town centers host outdoor movie nights in early fall. Keep an eye on events at Chesapeake Parks & Rec and Virginia Beach Events for free movie nights under the stars.
Add a little history and mystery to your fall fun with a walking ghost tour. Try Ghosts of Virginia Beach or Historic Smithfield’s Ghost Walk. They’re just the right amount of spooky for families and older kids.
While local orchards are limited, you can take a day trip to Mount Pleasant Farms in Chesapeake for apples and fall produce—or simply grab fresh apples from your nearest farm stand and make a homemade crisp. It still counts!
You don’t need a mountain cabin to enjoy s’mores and sweaters. Invite the neighbors, light the fire, and toast marshmallows under the stars. Bonus points if you serve hot cider or mulled wine!
Whether it’s your first fall in Hampton Roads or your 15th, try something new—visit a local museum, pop into a boutique you’ve never noticed, or find your own hidden gem. This season is all about slowing down and soaking it in.
So there you have it—10 simple, seasonal ways to fall in love with your home all over again. Whether you’re sipping lattes or strolling through the market, make space for joy this season. You deserve it!
