Hey y’all! There’s something wonderfully special about Coastal Virginia in the winter months — the air is crisp, the beaches are peaceful, and the community is quietly vibrant in January and February. As your friendly neighborhood Realtor®, I’m excited to share some of the best local happenings and things to do in our gorgeous coastal region as we step into the new year.
Thinking about sprucing up your space or getting inspired for your next move? The Home Owners Expo at the Chesapeake Conference Center (January 11–12) gathers local builders, designers, and home-service experts — a great opportunity to connect with professionals who can help bring your 2026 home goals to life. If toe-tapping tunes are more your style, the Chesapeake Winter Bluegrass Festival is a must. Hosted at the Chesapeake Conference Center January 17–18, the weekend features live performances, workshops, and jam sessions celebrating all things bluegrass. Family-friendly and full of heart, it’s a cozy community event that captures small-town charm. (chesapeakebluegrass.com)
Ready to dream about summer fun? The Mid-Atlantic Sports and Boat Show returns to the Virginia Beach Convention Center January 24–26, bringing the latest in boats, fishing gear, and outdoor recreation. Even if you’re not a boater (yet!), it’s a great way to beat the winter chill and picture those warm-weather weekends ahead. (midatlanticsportshow.com)
One of my favorite winter traditions is the Winter Wildlife Festival hosted by Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation. From January 24 to February 1, 2026, you’ll find nature-based programs celebrating our coastal habitats — from guided bird-watching to oceanfront hikes and educational exhibits. It’s a perfect time to explore our region’s natural beauty while learning something new. (parks.virginiabeach.gov)
For the adventurous at heart, the Virginia Beach Polar Plunge on February 7, 2026, is an unforgettable experience — and all for a great cause! Thousands of locals and visitors brave the chilly Atlantic to support Special Olympics Virginia. Even if you’re not diving in, it’s a fun event to cheer on participants and soak up the lively energy. Calling all wine lovers (and those who simply enjoy a lovely afternoon out)! On February 7–8, 2026, the Coastal Virginia Magazine WineFest takes over the Virginia Beach Convention Center with wineries, cideries, live music, and specialty vendors. It’s the perfect mid-winter pick-me-up for couples, friends, or anyone who appreciates local flavor. (coastalvirginiawinefest.com)
While you’re out enjoying these winter happenings, it’s also a wonderful time to explore neighborhoods if you’re considering a move. From the historic charm of Norfolk to the beachy communities of Virginia Beach and the family-friendly suburbs of Chesapeake and Suffolk, each has its own personality and pace. Winter tends to be a little quieter in real estate, giving buyers time to browse thoughtfully — and often with less competition.
As the year unfolds, consider taking these small but meaningful steps:
These slower winter months are the perfect time to prepare so you’re ready to move when spring listings bloom.
